Experiential Learning in the UAE

Emerging Technologies and the Future of the Internet

During this experiential learning module in the United Arab Emirates, students explored emerging technologies shaping the future of the digital world. Through interdisciplinary inquiry and engagement with innovation hubs connected to Expo 2020, learners examined how technologies such as blockchain, cryptocurrencies, and decentralized systems are transforming industries and creating new possibilities for entrepreneurship. The project challenged students to investigate both the technical foundations and the social implications of decentralized technologies.

Building blocks:

Internet Decentralization

Driving Question: How might emerging decentralized technologies such as blockchain shape future innovation and entrepreneurship?

Interdisciplinary Themes: Computer Science, Digital Innovation, Entrepreneurship

Learning Experience: In this project, students explored the foundations of blockchain technology, NFTs, and cryptocurrency to understand how decentralized systems are transforming digital economies. Through research, discussions, and experimentation, learners investigated how blockchain works and explored its potential applications across industries. Students examined both the opportunities and ethical considerations surrounding these technologies, gaining a deeper understanding of how innovation can shape future economic and social systems.

Summative product: Students designed a decentralized digital solution using blockchain concepts. Projects included the creation of a decentralized application, token/coin, or NFT-based initiative. Each project included:

  • A wireframe or prototype demonstrating how the idea would function

  • A pitch deck presented to local experts

  • A rationale explaining how the solution would address a specific challenge or opportunity

Learning Reflection: This project encouraged students to engage critically with emerging technologies that are shaping the future of digital systems and global economies. By exploring blockchain and decentralized technologies through inquiry and design thinking, learners developed both technical understanding and entrepreneurial thinking.

Beyond the technical aspects, the experience invited students to reflect on the broader societal implications of innovation. Discussions around ethics, decentralization, and digital ownership helped learners consider how technological developments influence trust, governance, and economic participation. Through this process, students gained insight into how innovation emerges not only from technical knowledge, but also from creativity, collaboration, and responsible decision-making.

“Teaching requires going out of the comfort zone to challenge and inspire students to learn and grow.”
